ZimRights Petitions Parliament Over Nomination Period

Human rights lobby group, ZimRights yesterday petitioned the Parliament of Zimbabwe to extend the time for members of public to make nominations for people to be considered for positions of Commissioners for the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC).

In a statement, ZimRights says the notice given by the Parliament of Zimbabwe was short especially for a Commission like the ZHRC.

“ZimRights notes that ZHRC is a very important commission for the people of Zimbabwe. It further notes that the time period is very short for maximum participation” read the statement

The group raised concern that there has not been sufficient publicity to allow people to be aware of the call.

“Parliament has not availed sufficient tools and information for participation. The nomination forms currently are only available at Parliament building and on the website, and these platforms are inaccessible to the wider majority of people”

ZimRights says “participation in parliamentary processes should not be mere tokenism but must be substantial” therefore they are calling for the parliament to give more time as well as improve  on information dissemination and make the nomination form available in all provinces

The petition was signed by over 1000 ZimRights members from across the 10 provinces.
