Zimbabwe has realized a 5.7% growth in active Internet subscriptions to reach 51.9% in the second quarter of 2018 as shown in the industry sector results released by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) yesterday.
This signals a positive change in the telecommunications sector where revenues have been dwindling due to the poor performance of traditional voice and SMS services.
Active Internet Penetration Rate refers to a defined percentage of a country’s population which has access to the Internet through the local service providers.
According to the second quarter sector performance report released by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) yesterday, the increase in Internet penetration rate was directly influenced by a 2.8% increase in active Internet subscriptions recorded by Internet Service Providers such as Liquid Telecom, ZOL, and TelOne.
Other notable highlights from POTRAZ’s sector performance report was the increaase of mobile voice traffic by 9.1% to record 1.2 billion minutes in the second quarter of 2018 from 1.10 billion minutes recorded in the first quarter of 2018.
Inbound and outbound roaming traffic decreased by 28% and 24% respectively as compared to the statistics recorded in the first quarter of 2018.
The increase in the Internet penetration rate saw used international outgoing internet bandwidth capacity increasing by 56.6% to record 24,733Mbps in the second quarter of 2018 as compared to the 15,790Mbps consumed in the first quarter of 2018.
