The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says it is ready to conduct the highly anticipated Norton by-elections slated for Saturday.

Three candidates, Ronald Chindedza (Zanu PF), David Chingodzo (National Constitutional Assembly) and independent candidate, Temba Mliswa, will contest the by-election with  ZEC saying it is  ready to handle the task.

The country’s election governing body  says it will deploy 336 officers for the weekend’s Norton national assembly By-election.

“We are ready, and 336 officers will be deployed at 56 polling stations which have been agreed among stakeholders,” ZEC Chief Elections Officer, Mrs Constance Chigwamba said in an interview with national broadcaster, Zimbabwe Broadcast Corporation .

She warned citizens to desist from violence . This comes after violent scenes escalated during the weekend where alleged Zanu PF and Temba Mliswa supporters engaged in a nasty street fight.

Police had to move in to disperse the rowdy crowd using tear gas and water cannons.

After the violent incident, Mliswa told the press that he was the victim of Saturday’s clashes after he was denied entry into Ngoni Stadium, the venue for his futile “Final Nail in the Coffin” rally.

There have been a lot of squabbles in the lead up to the highly anticipated by-elections. Just a fortnight ago, a member of Mliswa’s campaign team, was abducted and forced to chant  ruling party slogans before being told to wear party regalia while denouncing Mliswa.

However, Zanu PF candidate, Chindedza denied being involved in thuggish tendencies by his supporters.

He said the ruling party has always been a peaceful party.

The Norton by-elections will be a litmus test for Zanu PF as they will gauge the strength of the party which has been rocked by factional fights within the top hierarchy.
