The recent vote of no confidence on three Zanu-PF Youth League executive members has opened a can of worms as it has emerged that money could have changed hands with party members bribed to endorsing the ouster of the Pupurai Togarepi leadership.
Togarepi, his deputy Lewis Matutu and three other members including secretary for Administration Tendai Chirau, the deputy national secretary for External Relations Admire Mahachi and deputy national Secretary for Environment and Tourism Mercy Mugomo were yesterday given a vote of no confidence on accusations of abusing youth league funds.
However, a close source told 263Chat that there are cracks within the youth wing which are threatening to spiral to the national wing if not properly addressed.
The source alleged that some members within the ruling party are tussling for positions and are not stopping at anything to destabilise the youth wing.
There are allegedly two factions, one aligned to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the other one fronting for Vice President Constantino Chiwenga
“There are people who are pushing a divisive agenda and they are causing factionalism. Some of them are power hungry that’s why they will not stop peddling lies.
“The recent purges were all but a farce. What happened is that there is a grouping of people who went to a local hotel after our press conference on Monday and they collected signatures from members who had attended the meeting.
“They then gave them $75 each for refreshments. Those signatures were then attached and were said to be endorsing the vote of no confidence,” said the source.
It is alleged that the politburo, which gives final positions, was not aware of the vote of no confidence hence the delay in firing the members from their positions.
“There are people like Vengai Musewe and Gertrude Mutandi who have been fronting this factional agenda. They want to cause a rift between number one (Mnangagwa) and number two (Chiwenga)
“They are trying to sow the seed of factionalism in the party, together with other senior members using state media and we will not allow that,” said the source.
It has also emerged that some youth leaders like Youth Commissar Godfrey Tsenengamu have been engulfed in a tussle for youth leadership positions.
Of late, Deputy Minister of information, Energy Mutodi, has been accused of trying to destabilize the youth wing.
Mutodi made his claim known in a tweet expressing his interest in leading the youth league.
“I am ready to serve as the ZANU PF Secretary for the Youth League if President ED Mnangagwa chooses me. I am committed to the establishment of an informed, vibrant, vigilant & empowered youth league for the good of our party ZANU PF & for the greater good of Zimbabwe,” said Mutodi
