Two senior mining officials have been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for allegedly extorting money from a prospective miner.
ZACC said in a statement that it had arrested Junior Mudyawabikwa, the deputy provincial mining director for Mashonaland West, and Robson Farayi Chinanayi, a former surveyor with the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
The two officials are accused of demanding and receiving USD 5,000 from an applicant for a mining certificate in exchange for facilitating the issuance of the document.
The ZACC said the arrest was part of its ongoing efforts to curb corruption in the mining sector, which is a key source of revenue for the southern African nation.
Mudyawabikwa and Chinanayi are expected to appear at the Chinhoyi Magistrate court today, where they will face charges of criminal abuse of office and extortion.
