The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC T) led by Nelson Chamisa has threatened to make the country ungovernable should the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) fail to implement necessary electoral reforms that pave for credible elections.

Briefing the media after meeting at the party headquarters in Harare today, MDC-T youth chairperson, Happymore Chidziva said the country will not have elections as long as the necessary reforms are not implemented.

“We are therefore upping our push for electoral reforms starting with the 5th of June demonstration of electoral reforms, there shall be no election in this country as long as the necessary electoral reforms have not been instituted,” said Chidziva.

“We will make this country ungovernable as long as the necessary electoral reforms have not been instituted,” he added.

Chidziva also raised red flag over the establishment of additional polling stations which he said is a move to rig elections in favour of the ruling party.

He tore into deputy minister of Finance, Terence Mukupe and Minister of State for Masvingo provincial affairs, Josiah Hungwe over their controversial statements that the army will not allow the opposition to rule should they win the forthcoming polls.

“We know for a fact that both of them do not speak on behalf of the army and we are calling upon the professional soldiers as led by General Philip Valerio Sibanda to urgently speak out against  both Mukupe and Hungwe and stop them from masquerading as army spokespersons,” said Chidziva.

Early this year, MDC-T launched its Plan and Environment for A Credible Election (PEACE) document which sets out 10 demands among them demilitarisation of election institutions, the diaspora vote and amendments to draconian laws among others.

The document was handed over to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) election observer group who visited the country.
