War Vets To Stage Celebrations For ED’s New SADC Role

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) is organizing celebrations to honour President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s elevation to the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation.

The date for the celebrations is yet to be announced.

President Mnangagwa took over the chairmanship at the 39th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government Summit held in Tanzania just about a fortnight ago.

Addressing press this afternoon, ZNLWVA secretary for information, Douglas Mahiya said the ascendancy of Mnangagwa is also a victory for the liberation war fighters as he has remained their leader since the days of the war.

We will organize and demonstrate to the region how our President has been recognized as a force to reckon with in the region by being given chairmanship for the organ for defense Organ on Politics, Defense and Security. We applaud that, we are proud about that,” Mahiya told reporters at the organization offices in Harare.

“We are organizing a big events for that and all war veterans are coming to support the President for that,” he added.

Mahiya went further to vent out his anger towards opposition party, MDC for organizing mass demonstrations meant to topple the ruling ZANU PF led government while accentuating that power will not be yielded on a silver platter.

“There is no need to try and get power that takes people of Zimbabwe to achieve the upper-middle income status by 2030. There is no reason to take away that political power,” he roared.

This was a direct attack on opposition party, MDC that has been calling for leadership renewal.

The war veterans’ secretary said the problems bedeviling the country were a product of “non-progressive” which include the G40 and MDC elements within the public service who are sabotaging the smooth implementation of programs seconded by the ZANU PF party before threatening unspecified action against such elements.

“We have some G40 and MDC people in government occupying offices and they are the ones who are not implementing resolutions from the party. They are against the welfare of war veterans,” he added.

The development comes at a time when the country is at political crossroads, with opposition party MDC organizing mass demonstrations against government failure to resuscitate the economy on one hand, while pro-ruling party organs such as the war veterans organization are blaming opposition party for calling on sanctions on the other hand.

Analysts have however criticized ZNLWVA for exhausting its energy on “frivolous” issues while casting blind eyes on the economic decay crippling the country
