Violence rocks Harare

As the wave of protests continues to sweep through the country angry protesters whisking against President Mugabe’s government, ran riot in Harare yesterday destroying and looting property worth thousands of dollars.

Members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police crushed an MDC-T youth assembly demonstration against the Zanu PF led government.

A truck which belongs to Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation was burnt to ashes along Julius Nyerere way while a Police vehicle was also damaged.

Protesters also looted supermarkets including Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko’s Choppies in along Nelson Mandela Avenue

The demonstration which later turned ugly started  off with the official launch of #MyZimbabwe campaign by MDC-T youths.

In his #MyZimbabwe campaign speech, MDC-T youth assembly chairperson Happymore Chidziva vowed continue fighting the predicaments befalling the country .

“The reason I stand here today is not to help bury the remains of this great nation but to declare that we will never stand idle and let the old people  die with our future like they did during the liberation struggle,. We are here to save Our Zimbabwe,” said Chidziva.

He added, “Zimbabwe has been ruined by poor leadership, pure selfishness and old leadership which is worried about power rather than prosperity.

Police Spokesperson Senior Assistant commissioner Charity Charamba narrated the how the mayhem started.

“The Protesters who convened at the intersection of Julius Nyerere and Jason Moyo later went on the rampage, destroying property throwing stones. They also burnt two vehicles one belonging to the police  and the other to ZBC.

She added that many people reported the damages caused to their properties while adding that the police have identified the culprits who are now on the wanted list.

Charamba warned protesters that  any further illegal activities will be thwarted.

“We are saying people should demonstrate but peacefully without bring stones. When people resort to violence we will use the law to thwart such acts,” she said.
