They bring healthcare services directly to the doorsteps of individuals who would otherwise grapple with access barriers, particularly in locales marked by limited infrastructure and transportation alternatives.
In an interview with 263Chat, Linnet Makuwaza, a village health worker hailing from ward 14 in Rowa, Mutare Province, shared that she underwent training in 2015 and believes her role within the community has catalyzed transformative changes.
“We underwent training to identify and refer expectant mothers to the Antenatal Clinic (ANC). We champion health education and foster awareness within our communities. Dispensing invaluable insights on preventive measures, such as hygiene protocols, nutrition, family planning, and disease prevention.
“By disseminating crucial health-related knowledge, we empower individuals to make well-informed choices about their well-being and take proactive strides towards healthier lifestyles,” she articulated.
VHWs undergo training to detect early signs of illness and render basic healthcare services.
“Through routine check-ups and screenings, we can pinpoint and manage commonplace health conditions, such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and malnutrition. Timely identification and swift intervention appreciably alleviate the strain on formal healthcare facilities and elevate health outcomes within rural communities,” she appended.
