With the 2018 harmonized elections now 18 months away, Zanu PF Secretary for Administration, Ignatius Chombo has revealed his party has acquired vehicles and is working on modalities to purchase smartphones to be given to youths to aid the party’s campaign programs.
Addressing a Zanu PF National Youths Executive Council meeting on Friday, Chombo said the ruling party had purchased vehicles for use by the Youths League during the 2018 election campaigns.
“The party has embarked on a program to buy vehicles which we will give first priority to the youths because in the past they have been sidelined on such programs. We were having a shortage of cars within the party but that is soon to end.
“When the Secretary for Youths approached us, we heeded the call and we will be giving you the cars. These vehicles will be used for campaigns as you all are aware we are already in the 2018 election campaign mode. Key individuals will get vehicles earmarked specifically for them so that we allow them to carry out their duties as and when required,” Chombo said.
263Chat, however could not establish from Chombo how many vehicles will be handed over to the Youth League.
Chombo said all the logistics were in place to bring the vehicles into the country. “We should be able to be done with the clearance at the customs office by Monday and from there on, you will be having your own vehicles for use during the campaigns,” he added.
He said the party will also be looking into the use of social media for the election campaigns hinting that the ruling party will purchase smart phones for youths to enable them to reach out to as many people as possible.
“You are an educated lot, so we want to see if we can get you phones so that we also penetrate into the social media space and acquire more votes.
“We have a big challenge where most of the older generation does not know how to use social media, so it is our hope that we will engage you for that purpose and we also want you to teach us the older people to reach out the masses though social media so that we modernize our party,” said the Zvimba North Constituency Legislator.
Chombo dismissed as false claims that Zanu PF is in the habit of taking government funds for party business saying well-wishers and friends of the party chip in during times of need.
