Trainee Journalists’ Hail Digital Security Workshop

Trainee Journalists  from various Tertiary Institutions  have hailed the two day Digital Security workshop  held in Harare from the 15th-16th of February , with the aim to enhance Trainee Journalists’ digital security skills.

The Digital security workshop, which was ably supported by the Media Institute of Southern Africa –Zimbabwe (MISA Zimbabwe), was coordinated by the Journalism Student Network Zimbabwe (Jsnetzim) as part of its efforts to promote innovation, free speech and networking.

Speaking on the sidelines of the workshop, Green Pascal a final year Student from Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) said “the digital security training workshop is an important part of developing and enhancing capacity among trainee journalists.

This is more important as digital journalism has become an ever increasing practice and students need to be vibrant and protected on the cyber space. As the country inches onwards elections digital security is important so as to protect and safeguard information.”

His sentiments were ably supported by a Christian College of Southern Africa (CCOSA) student Peter Matangi who said “The major highlights of this workshop were the knowledge students attained on how to secure their digital accounts, awareness on dangers that comes with using digital spaces,”

Another CCOSA student Florence Masunzambwa said “It is a good thing that trainee journalists are getting such an opportunity to learn and understand more about digital security, with the advances in technology there is need to equip journalists with information to safe guard their work.”

Priscilla Kamurira, a Journalism student at Harare Polytechnic said “ With the advent of technology journalists have been forced to divert from traditional media to go digital. So, this workshop has come at a critical time when we have to revisit our safety.”

The Journalism Students Network of Zimbabwe Coordinator Tafadzwa Tseisi said the Digital Security Training is part of the Network’s efforts to promote innovation, free speech and networking among Students.

“Our Network facilitates exchange programs for Trainee Journalists with other forums or organizations that may be relevant to their advancement. The idea being to promote innovation, free speech and networking.” Tseisi said.

“We would want  to thank Stakeholders who have made such opportunities possible for our Network as this helps us bridge the gap between Tertiary Institutions and the Industry” Tseisi added.
