Junior Chamber International (JCI) City has broken new ground with its recent engagement with Harare City Council in a bid to make a difference not only only in the country but across world.
Officiating at the opening night ceremony, Harare Mayor, Bernard Manyenyeni commended the work that, JCI City is doing in addressing various challenges that affect citizens.
“I would like to commend the work being done by these young active citizens who chose not to be spectators but aim to be catalysts for change in addressing various challenges that affect our day to day lives.
“The world is at a crossroads, and young people find themselves at the center. The global community is plagued with large scale complex challenges which put the future of our world in serious danger. To do or not to do something becomes the question for young people.
“The world needs young active citizens who will change the status quo. Zimbabwe has these active citizens and the City of Harare definitely needs young active citizens,” he said.
Mayor Manyenyeni added that the City Council is working with JCI in a bid to achieve the 2020 vision of making Harare a world class city.
“As you may know, the City of Harare’s vision is that of making Harare a world class city by the year 2025. But that vision cannot be achieved if the City Council works alone. The City Fathers are only the local authorities, but Harare is you, the resident.
“The City Council cannot realize this dream alone. I strongly believe we can forge a relationship with JCI in Harare. We will make Harare better together
“Already, I am happy to say JCI City has already started working with the City Council to see this vision through, through its Fix Up Greenwood Park project which seeks to clean up, rehabilitate and revamp the Greenwood Park,” added Manyenyeni.
He went on to pledge support to JCI and its activities that seek to empower young people.
Speaking at the same event, JCI City President, Sam Nehumba, said this year they will be working on projects that empower young people and uplift communities.
“JCI City will run projects that empower young people and uplift communities. We will run projects aimed at achieving specific SDGs through uniting civic society, government and business,
“We will recognize exemplary young people through our Ten Outstanding Young People (TOYP) programme and throughout the year, we will promote and advocate that there be peace through the Peace Is Possible initiative.,
“We will also actively be involved in the fight against road carnage and promote road safety. We realize that the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) cannot do it alone. We will work closely together and be advocates for change in the death toll by our fellow countrymen through road accidents,” explained Nehumba.
