The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) is offering a US$500 for anyone with information leading to the arrest of three unidentified individuals who broke into the Nyamepi Campsite in Mana Pools and made off with a trove of valuables including cameras, binoculars and smartphones from an unlocked vehicle.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident, which occurred under the cover of darkness at the renowned National Park.
“The suspects allegedly entered the campsite and stole two cameras, two pairs of binoculars, two Samsung phones, and other valuables. They may have fled using a boat after rangers and police followed their footprints for several kilometers,” Farawo said
The break-in has prompted an immediate security clampdown with ZimParks working in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
They have launched intensified aerial and river patrols while deploying armed rangers at all public campsites during nighttime hours.
Farawo said a mobile emergency response vehicle is now on standby to ensure swift reaction to any future threats.
“While no further suspicious activity has been detected at this time, we are not taking any chances,” he said
Authorities believe the suspects may have exploited the area’s proximity to the Zambezi River to stage their escape via water, evading foot patrols and drone surveillance.
In an effort to improve communication and transparency, ZimParks has also created a WhatsApp group for tourists and other stakeholders aimed at sharing real-time updates and enhancing coordination across the park.
“We remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of our visitors, in harmony with nature,” Farawo said.
