Nigeria’s Super Eagles will miss next year’s Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Gabon after they were beaten 1-0 on Tuesday by the Pharaohs of Egypt in a crucial Group G clash at the Borg El Arab stadium, Alexandria.
The Egyptians had on Friday forced Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Kaduna.
The Eagles needed to win Tuesday’s game to stand a realistic chance of returning to the AFCON after missing out on the 2015 edition.
But the Pharaohs, who missed out on the last three editions, mustered all they had to beat Nigeria 1-0 to extend their lead to five points in Group G.
The hero of the day for the Egyptians was 19-year old Al-Alhy youngster, Ramadan Sohly, who scored in the 64th minute after Nigerian goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, had made a number of saves.
Nigeria did have their fair chances but could not bury any and would now have to watch the 2017 AFCON yet again on the screens same way they did in 2015.
