Steel Company Sets Sight on Boosting Zim Economy

Steel Brands Private Limited has vowed to help revamp the country’s economy through boosting local production of steel to ease the import bill while developing community youths in Houghton Park with engineering and electronics skills.

Addressing Journalists earlier this week, Steel Brands Marketing Executive, Rodwell Makuni said they will be involved in import substitution, training youngsters and export earnings to bring in foreign currency.

“Certainly we want to help boost the economy of Zimbabwe by involving ourselves in import substitution by producing products that will be imported, training the youngsters to be professionals in various fields such as engineering, electronics and have also engaged a number of girls who are already attached.

“We have quite a number of people being trained by expert engineers from India who will go back when the locals they are training are satisfied. We will also be involved in export earnings to bring in foreign currency into the country and to develop the downstream industry.

“We have also put up a plant that contains pollution and our intention is to put it up a similar plant in each of the 10 provinces in the country so that Zimbabwe becomes self-sufficient in the production of deformed bars,” said Makuni.

Touring the Steel Brands, Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province Miriam Chikukwa urged the company to continue engaging the community in their work.

“After the outcry about air pollution in the area, I am happy that they are involving the community in their projects and training students and urge them to continue engaging them.

“As for government, I am happy that in the few months they have operated they have managed to give ZIMRA USD$3 million and if they start exporting Zimbabwe will start getting more foreign currency especially from SADC area,” said Chikukwa.

Steel Brands Company is recruiting students from Houghton Park, training them on engineering skills and have drilled a a community borehole as part of their corporate social responsibility.
