Celebrated South African musician Ramaphola Hugh Masekela is no more.
Masekela died at the age of 78 after suffering from prostate cancer in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Masekela is known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as ‘Soweto Blues’ and ‘ Bring him Back Home.’ He was also the Father of American host Sal Masekela.
The news of him passing on was confirmed by his family on his twitter handle today.
“It is with profound sorrow that the family of Ramapolo Hugh Masekela announces his passing,” reads the notice.
Since 1954, Masekela has played music that closely reflects his life experience. The agony, conflict, and exploitation South Africa faced during the 1950s and 1960s inspired and influenced him to make music and also spread political change.
He was an artist who in his music vividly portrayed the struggles and sorrows, as well as the joys and passions of his country.
Masekela also collaborated with some Zimbabwean artists including Oliver Mtukudzi, Ammara Brown and many others.
