The southern African Development Community (SADC)’s Climate Service Centre (CSC) has issued a heat wave warning across the region, 263Chat has learnt.
The region has been experiencing high temperatures of late in the past few weeks.
“SADC has issued a heat wave warning across the region, stating, “Persistent temperatures in the range of 30ºC to 35ºC are expected in bulk of central SADC. Temperatures have a high probability to exceed 40ºC, reaching the threshold for heat wave alert during the forecast period,” said the report
The Climate Service Centre, headquartered in Gaborone, Botswana released a report with three main categories, which are caution, warning and danger.
According to the map presented in the report, areas that include Kariba, Hwange and the rest of the southern parts of the country are in the danger zone.
The regional body went on to warn the general public to either stay indoors during the day or at least make sure they stay hydrated to avoid heatsrokes.
“Quick tips to avoid heatsrokes and loss of life, stay hydrated and indoors as much as possible. Avoid alcohol and sugary beverages. Wear loose fitting light coloured clothes. Put on a hat outdoors, and never leave children unattended. Remember to check on friends and neighbours,” read the report.
However, the Climate Service Centre will keep the region updated on the temperature forecast.
“The next advisory will be issued dependent on a sustained high temperature forecast expected to occur in more than a single SADC member state,” said the report.
