Victims of recent floods in Hwange have received a major relief after Lions International Club donated goods and foodstuffs worthy $10 000 towards their welfare.
In an interview with 263Chat, Jona Machaya, Lions International’s, First vice Governor for District 412, said his organisation availed funds to help those affected by floods in Hwange, with the disbursement of food stuffs set to start soon.
“After we got a call on the situation in Hwange, our Alert Officer informed us on the impact of the floods and we received a donation of $10 000 from or International office in the United States which will be channeled towards relief aid for that area.
“We wanted to have disbursed the relief aid but as you might be aware, it’s difficult to access the money from our banks but we are now in the process of buying food stuffs and some other important relief material, a process which we are looking forward to do in the coming days,” said Machaya while adding that members of the Lions Club have raised monies over and above the donation to cater for the people in Hwange.
Machaya revealed that the situation in Hwange has stabilized in recent days after fears that the current excessive rains, would worsen the situation.
The non-profit making organisation has in the past assisted with relief aid for the Tokwe Mukosi disaster as well as the Muzarabani Floods disaster.
Meanwhile, Lions Zimbabwe, through its United States based partners, Wheelchair Foundation, has made a wheelchair donation to people with disabilities.
The wheelchairs set to be distributed throughout the country, will see more than 203 people with disabilities benefitting from the goodwill gesture.
