Government says it is focusing on resuscitation of the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) with a total of 31 new wagons set to be commissioned during the first week of next month.
The struggling NRZ secured 31 wagons which are currently at the final stages of inspection, and their commissioning is set to boost the operations of the entity.
The Permanent Secretary of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Mr. Munesushe Munodawafa told participants at the recently held pre-budget consultative workshop that refurbishment of truck infrastructure and recapitalization of the entity remains the key priority areas for the shareholder.
“Government will soon unveil 31 wagon to the NRZ in effort to resuscitate the company. We hope the coming in of these new wagons will go a long way in trying to address the challenge of carriage of goods that the country is currently facing,” Munodawafa said.
He added that government remains committed to address salary for NRZ workers with some having gone for over 9 months salaries
Participants resolved to diversify resource mobilization initiatives and to support private sector participation in the development of national infrastructure.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Parliamentary Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Dexter Nduna said a sound infrastructure base is crucial in national development.
