Tourism and Hospitality Minister, Dr Walter Mzembi is confident of landing the coveted United Nations World Tourism Organisation Secretary General’s post at the elections scheduled set for May in Madrid, Spain.

Addressing journalists after receiving a $10 000 sponsorship package from NetOne, Mzembi said he has his eyes set on the crown and is high in confidence that Africa will for the first time land the post.

“Over the past few months since May 2016, when this journey started, I have applied myself to the best of my abilities. I have done almost everything that I could to make me be the best candidate for post.

“It is in that regard that I think I will land the UNWTO Secretary General’s post, a position which I think will go a long way in marketing brand Zimbabwe. I’m fully aware of the burden that I’m carrying as I think I have the African cross on my shoulders,” said Dr Mzembi.

He added that despite the late entry of the Seychelles in the race to replace   Dr. Taleb Rifai, the outgoing Secretary General, he is adamant he will walk away the winner as he has the full backing of the Africa Union.

“The coming in of the Seychelles into this fray means that the African vote will be split and that leaves me in a precarious position. But it should be remembered that I have the full backing of the AU as I’m going in this election not only as a Zimbabwean but as the African Union endorsed candidate and that gives me a slight advantage over my other African competitor,” said Mzembi.

The task to land the UNWTO top post will not be easy as Mzembi will have to shrug off competition from six other competitors.
