Music producers urged to react to coming in of new stations

BULAWAYO – Music producers have been urged to work with artists to produce more products in anticipation of the opening of new metro radio stations.

Eight new commercial radio stations are expected to come on board later in the year after the Broadcasting Authority Zimbabwe (BAZ) licenced eight private stations to broadcast in some of the country’s major cities.

The eight who received commercial licenses are: AB Communications which won two licences (Gogogoi FM and Faya FM for Masvingo and Gweru respectively), Kingstons (Nyaminyami FM and KE100.4 FM for Kariba and Harare respectively), Fairtalk Communications (Skyz Metro FM and Breeze FM for Bulawayo and Victoria Falls respectively), Zimpapers (Diamond FM for Mutare) and Ray of Hope trading as YA FM in Zvishavane.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Bulawayo, Skys Metro FM boss, Cont Mhlanga urged music producers to churn our more music to supply the new stations.

“I expect to see music producers, talent developers grooming new talent in the coming weeks in anticipation of the new stations that are coming board,” said Mhlanga.

The veteran arts administrator also revealed that they have engaged the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) to introduce music publishing courses in the near future.

The music courses will target upcoming musicians so they produce quality products that will make it to national radio stations.

“We have engaged the National University of Science and Technology with a view to introduce music publishing modules that will target musicians and music publishers. We have realised that most musicians lack knowledge and technical expertise and we are concerned about this,” said Mhlanga.

The courses are expected to start in the first week of May.
