Mnangagwa Govt Charms UN

The United Nations (UN) system in Zimbabwe has welcomed the government’s commitment towards improving the country’s social service delivery, economy and other key deliverables, calling on the new administration to promote constitutionalism, respect of law and protection of human rights ahead of the 2018 harmonized elections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the global development agency noted that they have renewed their collective commitment to support the Government and people of Zimbabwe, building on the longstanding engagement anchored on relationship of trust and mutual respect with all stakeholders.

“The expressed commitment of the government goes towards social cohesion, peace, economic recovery, job creation, accelerated reforms and credible and transparent elections in 2018,

“Zimbabwe commits to scale up its joint support to national efforts towards creating a conducive environment and inclusive growth towards socio-economic and gender equality,

“Increasing participation of all citizens, especially women, in democratic processes,” read the statement.

The UN System in Zimbabwe further expressed satisfaction at the 2018 National Budget presented in November saying it lays a foundation for reforms, adding that increased allocations to social services and productive sectors is most welcome.

“We also take note of the policy shifts and measures towards economic recovery, stabilisation and inclusive growth through employment creation. Timely disbursements and efficient use of the allocated budgets would be critical,” noted the UN system in Zimbabwe.

The UN system said they remain committed to the principle of national ownership and leadership, giving  special attention to the most vulnerable population particularly women, children and youths.

“Promotion of constitutionalism, respect of law, consolidation of peace, protection of human rights and gender equality will remain important as the country prepares for the harmonized elections in 2018 and beyond,” added the statement.

The UN System in Zimbabwe further reconfirmed its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe advance sustainable, rights based and inclusive development while strongly supporting the government’s commitment and efforts towards re-engagement with the International Financial Institutions (IFIs).
