The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has seized a substantial cache of contraband cough syrups, specifically BronCleer and Adco-Salterpyn, totalling 450 bottles after a raid at the Old Trafford flats on 13 Edmond Avenue, Belvedere, Harare,
This achievement underscores the Authority’s relentless commitment to combat the scourge of drug and substance abuse and the illicit distribution and misuse of pharmaceuticals within our borders.
MCAZ Inspectors, in collaboration with officers from the CID Drugs and Narcotics division, were instrumental in the operation, leading to the discovery and confiscation of 350 bottles of BronCleer cough syrup and 100 bottles of Adco-Salterpyn syrup. An individual present at the scene is currently assisting law enforcement agencies in their ongoing investigations.
These illicit cough syrups, BronCleer and Adco-Salterpyn, contain opioids and notably lack registration in Zimbabwe, rendering them unauthorized substances. Opioids, categorized as Dangerous Drugs, have regrettably become prey for opioid addicts who misuse these cough syrups. The repercussions of such misuse are severe, with serious health risks and potential complications arising when these substances are not administered under the watchful eye of medical professionals.
“The MCAZ is unwavering in its mission to protect public health by ensuring that only authorized and regulated medications grace our market shelves. The Authority is poised to maintain its close collaboration with law enforcement agencies to root out and apprehend all individuals involved in the clandestine trade of such substances.
“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities linked to drug and substance abuse, as well as the distribution or sale of unregulated pharmaceutical products. Your cooperation is valued and vital in our collective endeavour to safeguard public health and safety,” said MCAZ in a statement.
