Zimbabwean boxing sensation, Charles Manyuchi has dismissed media reports that he lost his WBC Welterweight Silver Championship title to Russian Dmitry Mikhaylenko.
Manyuchi’s Manager, Chris Malunga of Oriental Quarry Boxing Promotions said it was not true that the diminutive boxer, was stripped off his WBC title after he failed to fight in the stipulated time. “Contrary to those reports in the media recently, Charles is still the WBC Welterweight Champion. For him to relinquish the title he has to be involved in a fight which would have been sanctioned by the WBC and if he loses then he will stop being a champion,” said Malunga.
He explained the process that results in a champion losing his title which he said is only created for better opponents waiting for a fight with the champion.
“An interim champion does not become a champion upon winning his match, he waits for a sanctioned fight with the current champion and only until he wins the match can he assume the title. As it stands Charles is third on the WBC Welterweight Championship behind Amir Khan and Andre Berto hence he is still there,” assured Malunga.
He revealed that he will be travelling to the Miami, USA this week to organize a lucrative match for Manyuchi who is set to fight an Asian opponent in Singapore this year, prior to the Miami fight.
Malunga urged the media to play its role in promoting the boxing sport in the country and help build a legacy through reporting positively for its son, Charles Manyuchi.
According to the story in question, Manyuchi was reported to have lost his championship on the technicality that one of his past opponents seized the opportunity of his failure to defend his belt in time and fought for a right to it. However, Malunga scoffed at the reports saying Manyuchi was never sanctioned to fight for it by the WBC and had no obligation to get into any fight at the time.
