Mamombe, Chimbiri Bail Denied

Harare Magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti has denied bail to two MDC Alliance youth leaders Joana Mamombe and Cecelia Chimbiri on the grounds that the duo will likely commit further offences if released.

Chimbiri and Mamombe were arrested after they addressed a press conference outside the Harare magistrate’s court demanding the release of incarcerated human rights activist, Makomborero Haruzivishe.

Magistrate Muchuchuti said, “if released on bail the duo is likely to commit further offences.”

Meanwhile, Netsai Marova who was arrested together with Mamombe and Chimbiri was released yesterday on RTGS$15 000.

The trio who have been in and out of remand prison were last year arrested for faking abduction after they were tortured by suspected state security agents and dumped near Bindura.

Mamombe and Chimbiri have since sued home affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe and police commissioner-general Godwin Matanga demanding compensation of ZWL$15 million for “unlawful” circulation of their naked pictures snapped by an investigating officer.
