Following Chimurenga music icon, Thomas Mapfumo’s claims that only him and the late Oliver Mtukudzi had made names across the world while dissing Sungura maestro, Alick Macheso for being a distant third on the international scene, so much was expected from his Friday show at Tanza Centre in Chitungwiza.
However the hype around his Macheso diss, did not translate into better fortunes as his joint show with Progress Chipfumo was poorly attended as has become the norm with his local performances since his return to Zimbabwe late last year.
Even Chipfumo who curtain raised the show did little to overturn the misfortune.
Despite low numbers, Mukanya was not deterred from delivering a well coordinated, corded and solid performance.
He boldly took to the stage cautioning and administering over his band to deliver a polished act that befit his international recognition.
As if he was ignorant of the poor attendance, an hour into the performance, Mukanya as he is affectionately known by his legion of fans, took off his jacket to show off a long-sleeved black and white t-shirt inscribed, “LEGENDARY KING.”
Though his movements were a bit limited because of aging legs, Mapfumo cheered music lovers in attendance with some swift and slow dance moves till dawn, closing the show as late as 5am in the morning.
