Lumamba William Gerald Mutumanje was yesterday granted $400 bail after appearing in court facing charges of undermining the authority of the President as defined in section 33(2) of the criminal law (codification reform act).

Lumumba dropped the F word on the president during the launch of his political party, VIVA Zimbabwe.

Lumumba, 28, was ordered to pay $400 bail on conditions that he must not leave his residential place, report to Central Intelligence Department (CID) once a week and surrender his passport.

In his ruling Harare magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe said that Lumumba was not a flight risk.

“Bail is a fundamental right which is given to a suspect and the accused is not a flight risk since he handed himself over to the police,” he said.

Magistrate Chikwekwe disputed evidence which was brought before the court by state witnesses, opposing bail.

He also  dismissed claims that Lumumba had a direct link to the wave of protests currently prevailing in the country.

“The accused person assaulted the president but claims that he masterminded the protests are not true,” he said.

However, the matter was adjourned to the 15th of July 2016 for further trial.
