Following ‘man of the moment’ Mambo Dhuterere’s vote of confidence which came through five nominations for the forthcoming 2019 PERMICAN Gospel Awards, the year 2020 will come as the bulky singer’s litmus test after securing a rare slot to perform among seasoned gospel musicians at the Worship Experience Concert.
Dhuterere, who has been nominated for Song of the Year, Best Newcomer, Best Traditional, Best Songwriter and Best Collaboration categories will have a test of his mantle on January 1 as he will tussle with the likes of Tembalami, Janet Manyowa, Baba NaMai Charamba, Minister Mahendere, Takesure Zamar and Mathias Mhere among many others.
Just like forgotten comedian, Baba Tencen, it will be Dhuterere’s make or break moment.
After his debut performance in front of thousands at the gigantic Harare International Conference Centre in 2016, Baba Tencen’s fame died a natural death as he was exposed by experienced and internationally acclaimed Ugandan comedienne Annie Kansiime.
Another musician who comes to mind is Tocky Vibes who only needed one lukewarm and rather subdued performance in December 2014 for his brand to tumble from the top.
He has however managed to resuscitate his brand making him one of the most sought after musicians by the diaspora community.
Such a fate is what many fear Mambo Dhuterere will suffer as he has been labelled a chancer on an exhausted Zimbabwe’s gospel music scene.
The highly competitive showbiz industry has on so many instances attested to that, great vocals and writing skill that is accompanied by energetic live performances on stage determines the longevity of an artist’s prime.
