Khupe Snubs Mwonzora

MDC-T deputy president, Thokozani Khupe snubbed a press conference addressed by party president Douglas Mwonzora demanding answers outstanding grievances from the December 27 Extra Ordinary Congress.

In a statement following her conspicuous absence from the press conference that was attended by the party’s leadership including national chairperson Morgen Komichi, vice president Elias Mudzuri and secretary general Paurina Mupariwa, Khupe confirmed meeting Mwonzora and registering her displeasure over how the December congress was handled.

“I can confirm that I met with Sen. Douglas Mwonzora in Harare on 18 February 2021 for the first time since 27 December 2020 Extraordinary Congress. The following issues were discussed: Violence, illegitimate voters roll as well as inquorate EOC among.

“Illegal appointments in the standing committee which are a violation of the party Constitution. The National Council held on 6 February 2021 had no mandate to alter or amend the Constitution.

“My absence in today’s press conference held at MRT was informed by the need to address the aforementioned important issues to enhance the smooth running of our great movement, MDC T,” said Khupe.

Mwonzora had told journalists that Khupe was travelling from Bulawayo while also claiming that she had accepted and endorsed his presidency.

Mwonzora assumed presidency of the opposition outfit at the party’s Supreme Court ordered chaotic elective congress to choose a new leader following the demise of veteran leader Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018.

Khupe walked out of the congress alluding to anomalies on the voter’s roll despite protesting, the elections proceeded.

Despite protesting the electoral process, Mudzuri and Komichi have since swallowed their pride and accepted Mwonzora’s leadership.
