Chitungwiza Mayor, Councillor Lovemore Maiko has been picked by the Zimbabwe Republic Police law and order section, the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has announced.
Maiko was picked from his office in Chitungwiza and taken to Harare Central Police station.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that Maiko is suspected to be behind the burning of a Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) vehicle during the 2017 violent demonstration organised by a shadowy grouping by the name #Tajamuka/Sesijikile.
Early this week, the police took to Twitter to share images of people they said were behind violence that broke out the Central Business District of Harare.
One of the pictures had a man the police suspect to be Maiko.
The youthful Chitungwiza Mayor was this week assaulted by suspected Zanu PF youths after he handed a letter of suspension to the dormitory town’s Town Clerk George Makunde.
Makunde is a known Zanu PF member in Chitungwiza.
