Opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa Friday morning extended his condolences to the Mugabe family following the death of former president Robert Mugabe who passed on in Singapore after a long illness.

Posting on Twitter, Chamisa described Mugabe’s death as a “dark moment”

“My condolences to the Mugabe family and Africa for the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding President. This is a dark moment for the family because a giant among them has fallen. May the Lord comfort them,” he said.

On the eve of last year’s elections, Mugabe endorsed the opposition MDC party, a move largely seen to based on the former president’s hatred towards his own party, ZanuPF which is led by Emmerson Mnangagwa, his successor.

Mugabe was deposed in 2017 by a military coup instigated by Mnangagwa.

Chamisa, however, said his party holds much respect to the fallen leader despite political differences.

“Even though I and our party, the MDC, and the Zimbabwean people had great political differences with the late former President during his tenure in office, and disagreed for decades, we recognise his contribution made during his lifetime as a nation’s founding President,” he said.

Meanwhile, condolence messages continue to trickle in for the Mugabe family.
