Norton Member of Parliament, Themba Mliswa has responded to a story on MDC-T Acting President, Advocate Nelson Chamisa’s possible arrest on charges of inciting violence at the burial of the late party leader Morgan Tsvangirai in Buhera saying such a move will only make him more popular, thick skinned and more determined.
The Sunday Mail newspaper yesterday published a story titled “Chamisa Faces Arrest” which alleges that some unnamed party members were planning to report him to police for inciting violence in Buhera.
Writing on the micro-blogging site Twitter yesterday, Mliswa said using incarceration for political expediency will not work, “Chamisa’s arrest can’t be attributed to ED but factional fights in MDC. But they fail to realize that using incarceration for political expedience only serves to make the victim more popular, thick skinned & more determined. I know having been arrested & acquitted 70+ times.”
MDC- T Presidential spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka was a bit worried by the story saying Zanu PF might want to eliminate their Presidential candidate since the country is going towards general elections.
“His conscience is very clear, he is not involved in any of violence acts that happened in Buhera, maybe it is ZANU PF who wants to eliminate him.
“He was clear that he will make sure that people who did that will be investigated and justice shall rule,” said Tamborinyoka in an interview with 263Chat.
He added that the Zimbabwe Republic Police members were there at the funeral and witnessed the violence though they did not take any action.
Addressing mourners at the burial of Tsvangirai, Chamisa said he is committed to leading Zimbabweans even if it means being arrested or beaten.
“I know what they are capable of doing. Like what they did to my leader, Morgan Tsvangirai whom they beat and mistreated, but however, i am ready for it,” said Chamisa.
The youthful politician is the front-runner to succeed Tsvangirai after getting the approval of the National Council, the party’s highest decision making body outside congress.
Chamisa has also been endorsed by District and Provincial chairpersons who last week threw their weight behind his candidature for the forthcoming 2018 elections set to take place in five months.
