Gweru residents president acquitted

Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) president Cornelia Selipiwe has been acquitted of five charges of misconduct, after a hearing committee set up by  City of Gweru found him not guilty.

By Stephen Chadenga

Selipiwe who is also former workers’ committee chairperson was suspended in February this year after being accused of disrupting council business through his GRRA activities. However, the disciplinary committee ruled that council had failed prove that Selipiwe’s contract of employment could hinder him from joining a residents association.

“Prosecution failed to make reference on the part of the employee’s contract that bars him from joining the residents association, “reads part of the disciplinary hearing committee letter of determination.

The committee also ruled in favour of Selipiwe on accusations that he supplied confidential council information to the press saying there was no proof of that.

An elated Selipiwe told 263Chat, that the judgement passed on was a victory for democracy and the voice of Gweru residents in particular.
