Gvt eyes Old Mutual properties

Government has targeted properties belonging to Old Mutual as it plans to relocate Glen View 8 informal carpenters.

Addressing traders at Glen View 8 furniture complex today, Local Government Minister Savior Kasukuwere revealed that Old Mutual must comply with  government order and provide working space to the  informal sector.

“I am sending a warning to the owners of factories that are lying idle, they must hand over  those industries to the Small and Medium Enterprises,” he said.

Minister  Kasukuwere revealed that  he intends to engage old Mutual so that the company avails work space to entrepreneurs.

“We want to have a discussion with Old Mutual, it is the biggest land baron in the country. Part of its properties should be given  to our people, our people must benefit ,” said Kasukuwere, who is also the ruling party’s  National Political Commissar.

He also said that all the factories that are not operating must be reopened for use by SMEs.

“We are going to open all closed industries and give them to those who have skills and willing to use them,” he said.

Minister Kasukuwere said the closed industries were contributing to the skyrocketing levels of unemployment. He also indicated that companies which are not producing were depriving the country a chance to realise its maximum production capacity.

“Zanu PF cannot be blamed for not creating employment, we have plenty of opportunities in terms of employment creation, we just need  to open factories and allow local people to use them,” said Minister Kasukuwere.

Speaking at that same event, Minister of Small Medium Enterprises, Sithembiso Nyoni revealed that  Glen View 8 informal carpenters will soon be relocated to some of the dysfunctional industries  .

“SMEs play a crucial role in the reviving the country’s  economy and there is need to relocate them from such an open space to a more safer location,” said Nyoni.

“We cannot leave these people operating at such a space, even President is aware of these relocations,” added Minister Nyoni.

However, some carpenters perceive the plan to relocate them as a misguided citing that they will lose customers in the process.

“To me this plan is a threat to my business, my customers know that I operate from this place, and honestly relocating us is not a necessity,” said a carpenter who identified himself as Anesu Chiguvare.

While some traders openly refuted plans to be relocated, Poshia Chirwi, is one of the traders who have been charmed by the plan to be relocated.

“We cannot dispute what the government say, we have to do as they say as long as we continue earning a  living,” she said.
