Premier League clubs’ transfer window spending has topped £1bn for the first time, according to accountants Deloitte.
Figures showed gross spending by top-flight teams had reached £1.005bn by Wednesday morning, on the day the summer transfer deadline closes.
With a frantic day of last-minute deals on the cards, the total looked set to increase further before the 11pm cut-off point.

Deloitte said it was the first time that Premier League sides had splashed out more than £1bn in a single transfer window.
At the same time last year, gross Premier League spending was £780m.
It reached £870m by the end of the 2015 summer transfer window.
The British clubs’ spending splurge has been powered by the latest TV rights deal.
It helped Manchester United set a new world record with the £89m signing this month of French midfielder Paul Pogba.
