ZanuPF Secretary for Legal Affairs, Patrick Chinamasa has poured cold water on a possible coalition and a transitional arrangement with the opposition in wake of President Robert Mugabe’s recall from the party.
Speaking to 263Chat after the party’s Extra Ordinary Central Committee, Chinamasa said there was no chance of a coalition or a transitional government with opposition parties as the issue was purely a ZanuPF one.
“What happened today has nothing to do with the opposition, it has nothing to do with the national government, we are cleansing our own party.
“We were correcting our own mess, we have the majority in Parliament, we can expel the President alone and we are the ruling party, so where does a coalition come in, we dont need them?
“The removal of (President) Mugabe and his cabal was to enable us to go to elections as a strong force after some rogue elements had infiltrated the party,” said Chinamasa.
Another Central Committee member, Obert Mpofu rubbished reports of a potential coalition with the opposition front.
Said Mpofu,” I can not really give a definite comment but the decision lies upon the incoming President. what people have to know is that we are the majority and it wont be wise to have a coalition. we have to wait on due process to be followed but for now , we are not looking for any coalition,” said Mpofu.
There was massive talk of a potential coalition between the ruling party and several opposition parties after a massive march organised by war vets, was attended by members of various opposition parties.
Zanu-PF recalled Robert Mugabe as party leader and appointed former Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his place on Sunday.
Mugabe was also forced to immediately resign as President of Zimbabwe failure of which the party will ask the Chief Whip in Parliament to move a motion to have the 93 year old veteran political impeached.
First lady Grace Mugabe, who had harbored ambitions of succeeding Mugabe, was also expelled from the party among other top government officials who belonged to the G40 faction.
