Commuter omnibus Operators Swindle Passengers

Commuter omnibus operators are reportedly taking advantage of the country’s deregulated economy to swindle commuters of their hard earned money Passengers Association of Zimbabwe, (PAZ) has established.

In an interview with 263chat, President of the Passenger Association of Zimbabwe Tafadzwa Goliati said the abuse of the free market system always happen during times of bad weather, peak periods and whenever there are fluctuations in fuel costs

Goliati said Gazetted commuter fares were deregulated after the introduction of the multi-currency system in 2009.

“Fuel prices have been on a downward trend for more than two months now but we have not had any reductions in commuter fares. There is need for increased levels of law enforcements during this festive season,” Goliati explained.

He also urged commuters to use registered public transport, as well as use designated bus termini and bus stops, especially in the evening, to avoid being robbed.

“The advantages of using registered operators outweigh the disadvantages. In the case of accidents, one can easily get assistance from medical insurance or compensation,” he said.

Meanwhile PAZ is launching an awareness campaign to help equip passengers with knowledge on how to identify registered public transport vehicles and the advantages of using these vehicles when commuting.
