The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) President, Nelson Chamisa has apologized over his remarks that demonstrating on the 1st August 2018 was “very stupid”, saying his words created a wrong impression.
Briefing the media at his party headquarters, Chamisa blasted protesters who took it to the streets on the 1st of August saying the decision to demonstrate was very stupid.
“It was very stupid for people who demonstrated, to demonstrate for the results to be released, it was stupid because they then opened themselves for attacks and for manipulation.I think whoever demonstrated have their right but it was not called for and that’s my view,” Chamisa said.
This, however, did not sit well with public who demanded an apology from the 40-year-old opposition leader.
Writing on Twitter early Friday, Chamisa said his remarks created a wrong impression.
“My remarks to condemn those who killed or injured the innocent, burnt cars and destroyed property on 1 August used ‘words’ that regrettably created the wrong impression. The people have a constitutional right to demonstrate peacefully. Any discomfort caused is sincerely regretted,” Chamisa.
Giving testimonies before the Kgalema Motlanthe led Commission of Inquiry into the 1st if August 2018 post-election violence, military generals, the police and Zanu PF aligned witnesses threw brick bats at Chamisa’s shoulders alleging he invited the public to demonstrate.
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets on the 1st of August to register a displeasure over what they described as a delay by the electoral mother body, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to release presidential results.
