Bulilima Sets the Pace in Youth Empowerment

What began as an anti-drug campaign turned into a celebration of hope and purpose on May 24, 2025, as the Bulilima community witnessed a powerful transformation among its youth.

In a spirited event that combined awareness, empowerment, and graduation, dozens of young people and villagers were conferred with vocational skills in trades such as hotel and catering, welding, and detergent making. The initiative, backed by NetOne under its #ImpactingLives program, was more than just a graduation ceremony—it was a symbolic break from the chains of drug and substance abuse.

The campaign, held in the heart of Matabeleland South, comes amid growing national concerns over drug abuse among youth. With the theme of restoring dignity through skills, the Bulilima event is being hailed as a model for other communities to follow.

Government ministries, churches, private organizations, and civil society came together to make the campaign a success. NetOne, a key sponsor, emphasized the importance of partnerships in healing communities and offering alternatives to young people facing the lure of drugs.

“We’re not just fighting drugs—we’re building futures,” said one of the organizers. “Every skill gained here is a step away from addiction and a step toward a productive life.”

The campaign reflects the broader vision championed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who has consistently advocated for inclusive development under the mantra “leaving no one and no place behind.” Bulilima’s progress, community leaders say, proves that the slogan is more than words—it’s a lived reality.

Attendees left the event inspired, with many calling for similar programs across the country. For the graduates, the day marked a turning point—a moment when they chose purpose over pain, and skill over struggle.
