MUTARE – An illegal diamond dealer who tried to evade arrest by claiming to be Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operative has been fined $150 by Mutare Provincial Magistrate, Tendai Mahwe.

Ivor Dumisani Hamandishe, 28, of 16430, Unit K, Seke, Chitungwiza was convicted on his own plea by when he appeared at Mutare Magistrates Court on Thursday.
He was being charged for possession of articles for criminal use in contraventions of section 40(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act chapter 09:23.
It was the state’s case that on June 21, Hamandishe was part of a gang of 11 people who were allegedly in possession or dealing in precious stones near Cafe 111 Restaurant along Second Street in Mutare.
The group tried to resist arrest by claiming to be Central Intelligence Organisation operatives deployed in Mutare to investigate illegal diamond dealing activities.
Upon arrest, Hamandishe was searched and found in possession of two $100 counterfeit notes.
Hamandishe will be back in Court on 7 July where he will be tried for illegal possession of precious stones and is out on $200 bail.
