Army Assures Nation, Calls For Citizens To Remain Calm

Zimbabwe Defence Forces who are currently in control of state of affairs have insisted that the military has not taken over the running of the country while assuring the nation that President Robert Mugabe and his family’s security in guaranteed.

This comes after ZANU PF officials reacted to the statement that was issued by Commander of the Defence Forces Constantine Chiwenga on Monday calling  for an end to “purging” and “cleansing” of party members in the ruling Zanu PF party.

Chiwenga warned that the military was ready to step in and protect the country from counter revolutionaries whom they said had taken over the show in Zanu PF.

Meanwhile the army has made it clear that they are only targeting criminals in the ruling party who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country.

“We wish to assure the nation that his excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence forces Cde R.G Mugabe and his family are safe and their security is guaranteed.

“We are only targeting criminals under him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring justice and as soon as we accomplish our mission,we expect that the situation will return to normalcy,” said Major General Sibusiso Moyo.

Meanwhile Major General Moyo has urged Zimbabweans to remain calm and limit unnecessary movements .

“To the generality of Zimbabwe we urge you to remain calm and limit unnecessary movements,however we encourage those who are employed and those with essential business in the city to continue their normal activities as usual.

“Our wish is that you enjoy your rights and freedoms and that we return our country to a dispensation that allows for investment development and prosperity that we all fought for which many of our citizens paid the supreme sacrifice.

“To the Members of Parliament, your legislative role of paramount importance for peace and stability in this country and it is our desire that a dispensation is created that allows in to serve your respective political constituencies according to a democratic tenets,” said Moyo.

Meanwhile South African President Jacob Zuma, on behalf of Southern African Development Community, has called for calm and restraint, expressing hope that developments in Zimbabwe would not lead to unconstitutional change of government as that would be contrary to both SADC and African Union positions.

“l urged the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Defence Force to resolve the political impasse amicably, l also urge the Zimbabwean Defence Force to ensure that the maintenance of peace and security in the country is not compromised.
“SADC will continue to closely monitor the situation and remains ready to assist where necessary to resolve the political impasse in keeping with established SADC Protocols and processes,”said Zuma.
Alliance for the People’s Agenda (APA) led by Dr Nkosana Moyo has said it noted the military’s assertion that their actions do not constitute a coup saying they are hopeful that the country will return to normalcy.
“In regard APA affirms the position of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces that Zimbabweans remain calm and go about their business in the interest of stability.
“Our country’s economy has already suffered enough and any actions that exacerbate the situation are undesirable.
“Finally APA urges all Zimbabweans to reflect deeply on the road traveled to date that has got our nation into this sad state of affairs,this is a critical element that should inform how we proceed as we press the rest button,” said APA.
