The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported a significant drop in road traffic accidents during this year’s Africa Day holiday compared to the same period in 2024.
In a statement, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealed that 128 accidents were recorded in 2025, a decrease from 190 accidents in 2024.
“In the year 2024, the total number of road traffic accidents was 190, and then in 2025 the number was at 128,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
While the overall number of accidents dropped, the commissioner noted a slight increase in fatal crashes rising from six in 2024 to seven this year.
In terms of injuries, there was also an improvement. Nyathi confirmed that injuries from road traffic accidents decreased by 13 cases compared to last year.
Despite the mixed statistics, the police have commended the improved road safety and urged motorists to remain vigilant.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should adhere to all road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives. Above all, motorists should avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so,” said Nyathi
Meanwhile, the ZRP has released names of victims who died in a road traffic accident which occurred along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road yesterday.
The victims were identified as Lazarus Takanyara (47), Albert Gwaimani (47) both from Mashava, 19-year-old Ashley Zangure from Ngundu and a seven-month female infant.
The ZRP continues to stress the importance of responsible driving to protect lives on the country’s roads, particularly during public holidays when traffic volumes are typically higher.
