Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union, (ZICOSU) has urged minister of Higher Education, Professor Jonathan Moyo to make education more accessible to students.
Addressing journalist at a press conference in Harare today, UZ ZICOSU President, Nyasha Chidemo said that registration for students should continue to be ongoing as the country’s economy is malfunctioning.
“To the Higher and Tertiary Education minister, registration should continue to be ongoing, unless we mean to say it is for the rich only.
“Payment plans should be easily accessible to all students in need as this is the task of the Sar-registration and Registrar to identify all students in need and assist them to the best of the technical aspects provisioned for,”said Chidemo.
He also said that ZICOSU is concerned about the students’ welfare and called on the ministry of Local governance to look into the ‘exorbitant’ rentals being charged to the students at dismal conditions of living across the country.
“We call upon the ministry of Local governance to look into the exorbitant rentals being charged the student at dismissal conditions of living across the country.
“Students are not and will not be a fundraising project. Landlords respect our students and their welfare and seize to abuse their right to a descent living,” he said
Chidemo added that the government should pay all tertiary workers in time.
“We thus would like to call upon the government to maintain that the workers at all tertiary institutions are paid well in time so that it does not defeat the consistency of the academic proceedings as it a threat to our health,” he said
Commenting on the proposed diabolic parking fee of $100, Chidemo said the hiking of parking fees from $2 to 100 is totally uncalled for and unsustainable at the UZ Chapter.
Meanwhile, the Zanu PF affiliated group, ZICOSU also endorsed the expulsion of Tonderai Chidawa former ZICOSU president and his accomplice, Tinashe Mashambo the Secretary General from the union.
However, in a message circulating on whatsApp, the axed duo refuted claims that they are no longer part of the national executive.
“The Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (ZICOSU) distances self from a press statement currently circulating in the media purporting the expulsion of ZICOSU President Tonderai Chidawa and secretary general Tinashe Mashambo. Let it be clear that these two are still national executive members of the union and still hold their duly elected position,” reads the massage
