Chombo Arrest A Publicity Stunt: Madhuku

The recent arrest of former home affairs minister, Ignatius Chombo is only a publicity stunt by the President Emmerson Mnangagwa regime to portray a fake image of fighting corruption, his lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku has said.

Chombo was arrested on Monday by the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SACU) in connection with the Uchena Land Commission Report which alleges fraud and criminal abuse of office by the embattled ex-cabinet minister.

Addressing media yesterday following bail appeal proceedings at Harare magistrates court, Madhuku urged the judicial system to try Chombo on previous similar charges if it is really determined to deal with corruption.

“Today I’m speaking not just as a lawyer but also as a political activist, there should be more things to do, Chombo has been facing these kind of charges for a very long time. All they need to do is try him in respect of the charges we already have, but they cannot do that, they want to get publicity out of it,” Madhuku said.

He added, “I checked the three leading papers in the country yesterday and noticed they were all leading with this story. This is all they wanted, they have no intention of really convicting anyone. I think they want to enjoy this publicity we are doing to say they are fighting corruption, it is a disservice to the anti-corruption drive.”
