President Emmerson Mnangagwa Tuesday afternoon congratulated newly elected British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, who will assume office on Wednesday after winning the leadership of the ruling Conservative Party.
Mnangagwa said he hopes the two nations will forge working relations, ties which have been rocky since the violent land grabs instituted by the former President Robert Mugabe administration at the turn of the millennium.
“Congratulations @BorisJohnson on your election as leader of the Conservative Party and on becoming Prime Minister of the UK. I wish you good luck for the journey ahead, and look forward to building ever-closer ties between our two nations under your leadership,” he said.
Mnangagwa has made frantic efforts to mend the frosty ties between Harare and London and appeared to have won the heart of the now-former Prime Minister, Theresa May when he came to power through a military inspired transition that deposed Mugabe in November 2017.
However, it is unclear whether the eccentric Johnson will continue on the same trajectory taken by his predecessors from Tony Blair, David Cameron and May respectively.
