I’m Self-Made, My Dad Only Supports: King 98

Son to a successful businessman and founder of Impala Car Rental, Thompson Dondo, King 98 has pleaded for Zimbabweans to judge him from his music and not who his father is.

The 21-year-old started his music career on a high, roping in a collaboration with the internationally acclaimed music star, Davido. He further hosted the Nigerian star together with Nasty C at his debut album launch held at  Wingate Golf Club on Workers’ Day.

Being the son to a prominent businessman, who once attempted to prop another family member, Sam Dondo onto the showbiz scene, observers queried whether Davido and Nasty C graced King 98’s album launch out of genuine respect of his talent.

But speaking during The Lumumba Files Drive session the Shoko singer said he started making strides towards a music career with his father unaware.

“For me, music is a passion. I have always been doing this since I was 13 and I kept it a secret from my father. He only got to know after Casper Nyovest told him.

“Look at me, I have just released my first album and my next shows are in Zambia and Mozambique. My dad neither writes nor compose music for me. It is God’s plan for me to have him around me, it is a blessing because I need financial support from him,” he said.

“People should judge me according to my music, yes it’s cool my dad is there but let us focus on music,” said the crooner.

Meanwhile King 98, born Ngonidzashe Dondo, recently dropped visuals to his song Wacko that features South Africa’s Nasty C and Mozambique’s Laylizzy. The song has been receiving some positive circulation.
