CAAZ Boss bid To Escape Jail Flops

Suspended Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) boss David Chawota’s bid for freedom failed after Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa dismissed his bail application.

The beleaguered CAAZ boss was also served with a suspension later from the Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Joel Biggie Matiza ordering him to stop performing his duties with immediate effect.

Chawota is currently languishing in remand prison after he was denied bail.

The CAAZ boss is facing criminal abuse of office charges as he allegedly used his powers and unilaterally award a US$33 million contract to a company he handpicked contrary to government directive.

He also stands accused of signing a contract without board approval which saw CAAZ purchasing equipment worth US$33 million from a handpicked company without going to tender.

Chawota was in court again last month on other criminal abuse charges and is out on bail.
