Warriors coach Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa dedicated yesterday’s victory and qualification to the continent’s bi-annul tournament, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to cyclone Idai victims.
The cyclone left hundreds of people dead and thousands more homeless while hundreds remain missing with fears that the death toll could rise as water levels continue to subsidize.
Yesterday’s win came at a time when the country is still mourning those who died and before kick-off, a moment of silent was observed.
The entire Warriors team wore black armbands in honour of those who perished during the floods.
After the match, Mhofu said the win was a befitting dedication to the victims as the match brought a smile on a grieving nation.
“We played this match and won it for the cyclone Idai victims. We brought smiles to a nation that is crying,” said Mhofu.
The match coincided with the last day of national mourning that was declared by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday.
Warriors Defender, Tendai Darikwa also dedicated the win to the flood victims saying it was unfortunate that despite the win, some were missing from the celebrations.
“I want to say thank you to the people of Zimbabwe, they came out today and unfortunately there are some who couldn’t make it and to all the people who were affected by the cyclone, this is for them. Our hearts are with them,” Darikwa said.
Zimbabwe won the match 2-0 after first-half goals from Khama Billiat and captain Knowledge Musona to seal their qualification to the AFCON finals set to be hosted by Egypt in June.
