RwandAir Dumps Bond Notes

The Rwandan airline RwandAir has dumped the local bond notes as payment for their services with effect from tomorrow.

In a statement dated 22nd January 2019, RwandAir said all ticketing will now be in United States dollars.

“RwandAir would like to announce its decision to withdraw ticketing authority effective 24th January 2019 from Zimbabwe BSP. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause,” the statement said.

“All tickets will be issued in United States Dollars (USD),” said RwandAir.

Most airlines operating in Zimbabwe including Kenyan Airways, Ethiopian Airways, British Airways and Fastjet have been struggling to repatriate their money from Zimbabwe foreign currency problems and pulled out of local ticketing.

Bond notes, a surrogate currency introduced in 2016 to deal with cash crisis that had seen people struggling to access US dollars, used as the pseudo-official currency since 2009.

At the present moment, bond notes are trading at 230% against the US dollars, despite insistence by government that it is at par with the greenback.
