The town Bindura is battling against a serious shortage of schools with the five council schools currently carrying an average of 73 pupils per a class, City Mayor Carlos Tokyo has revealed.

Speaking at the Bindura Brockdale Show House on Friday last week, Tokyo said if the situation is not contained, 4000 pupils risk not being able to start primary school as the few schools available did not have enough facilities.

He thanked Homelink for building houses in the mining town, saying they should consider building schools to avert the serious challenge.

“This is a good gesture that Homelink has done in Bindura but we asking them if they could consider building schools in the area as there is a serious shortage.

“The few schools do not have enough school facilities and you will find that one teacher teaches a class of 73 children. Currently there are only five council schools and if this continues close to about 4000 learners will not be able to start primary school,” said Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Homelink has completed the construction of 68 houses at Brockdale in Bindura and the remaining 261 units are at various stages towards the targeted December completion.

Officiating at the event, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Deputy Governor Dr Kupukile Mlambo said “We recognize the urgent need to close the deficit in housing supply, particularly for the low income segment of the economy. We have therefore, increased the housing finance pool outside the traditional building societies to micro finance institutions such as Homelink,

“It is through such projects that we will be able to reduce the national housing backlog which stands at over one million units. Shelter is a basic human right and government through various policy initiatives seeks to extend these essential amenities to thousands of households at a reasonable cost,” said Mlambo.

Apart from Brockdale, Homelink is also working on housing projects in Harare’s Malborough and Strathmore, near Lake Chivero, Gweru, Mutare and Bulawayo.
